"It's Never Just About Marketing" with Amanda Laird

A more compassionate approach to marketing your business
1

Welcome to my imperfectly edited / sounding podcast! As I mentioned in the intro, this was my first time recording and editing a podcast interview, and boy have I learned some lessons. If you’re sensitive to imperfect audio, I recommend reading the transcript and/or checking out the key takeaways below.

And don’t forget to take advantage of Amanda’s unreal amount of marketing know-how that she’s poured into this free toolkit.

I’m grateful to have built a brand that embraces imperfection with compassion and humor — it gives me permission to be seen/witnessed “in progress.”

More to come!

Peace, love and workflows,

Andrea

Amanda Laird is the founder and principal strategist of Slow & Steady Studio, which provides business + marketing strategy and mentorship to feminist entrepreneurs at all stages of business — specifically those who want to simplify their business and marketing so that they can spend more time in their zone of genius, actually making money, and working with clients instead of fretting about marketing. Check out her Strategy Toolkit at https://slowandsteady.studio/toolkit

🔑 Takeaways:

  • Being “inconsistent” or feeling stuck in your marketing is not the problem, it’s a symptom. Explore for yourself: Is there something else going on that’s keeping you from showing up? (e.g. perfectionism, imposter syndrome/not enough-ness, misaligned business model or offer, etc.)

  • Marketing goes beyond social media. Showing up in conversations where you talk about what you do, allowing yourself to be ‘seen’ at networking events or community circles, sharing what you do with those closest to you, following up with a sales lead — these are all marketing activities. Making Reels on Instagram isn’t the only way.

  • You are not alone in your struggle to market yourself/your business. Putting yourself out there brings up a lot of stuff — stuff that goes beyond marketing. Give yourself some grace and compassion, and know you aren’t the only one at odds with the algorithm.

  • You are not your business. Especially for solo entrepreneurs, it’s easy to think of you and your business as one in the same (guilty!). Treating your business like a separate entity, one you can be in conversation and collaboration with, can help make marketing a bit easier and feel less personal when outcomes don’t meet your expectations (i.e. My post didn’t get a lot of likes, which means people don’t like me). You are way more than just a business.

❣️Show Notes

  • There is a brief mention of talisman during this conversation. While the use of talisman is still popular in current-day mystical practices, a lot of which are run by white folks, I want to acknowledge that the word originated in Arabic, Greek, and Latin languages.
