Embarrassing music makes mornings easier
Happy Monday, y’all! This morning, I shared with one of our Groove accountability crew groups that I’m not a morning person. I originally published this post in April 2022 and it still holds true today. In fact, I started the morning with this very playlist and it really put a pep in my step. This song in particular really hit the spot lol.
Enjoy!
I have a very hard time waking up in the morning unless I have no plans. If there is any form of responsibility or obligation waiting for me beyond the sunrise, I will have a difficult time waking up regardless of the time or reason. That obligation could be going to Disney World and it will still be a struggle.
No plans = waking up at the crack of dawn. I (obviously) don't make the rules here.
I'm in the midst of finding some new rhythms, which, thankfully, includes not having to fully function until after 10 am…
I'll hold here for whatever feelings you have towards me after reading that.
You may be thinking, surely that makes waking up easier for you, lazy [expletive]. Wrong!
In addition to my wake-up struggle, I also have a hard time getting out of bed more than 15 minutes before any required meeting or task. And if I do manage to wander into the living quarters before then, I will surely goof off until it's time to start stressing over time.
If you don't have ADHD or some form of mental health issue, you may have a strong urge to stop reading now. And you know what, that's okay. Have a lovely rest of your day!
For those who can relate to my struggle, I have a very specific tip that has worked for me at least a handful of times and is now, scientifically, a fact of life.
Embarrassing music makes mornings easier.
I have a playlist of songs I would (and do) turn down at red lights. Songs I would never play in mixed company. Songs that make me feel so feral, there are few people in my life I would allow to witness my behavior when these songs come on.
Early 2000s Jonas Brothers. One Direction. Aly & AJ. T-Pain. Artists from MTV's Making the Band that everyone but me forgot existed. Sneakernight (yes, she spells it as one word) by Vanessa Hudgens. The list goes on and on.
Blasting that playlist first thing in the morning is like Adderall for my soul. Caffeine without the anxiety jitters. If you've never started your day singing baritone with Josh Turner, it's time to unlock a new level of living.
My invitation to you, friend, is to create your own embarrassing playlist. Fill it with songs you haven't even admitted to yourself that you love. Play it next time you're having a rough start to the day.
And please, if you're feeling brave and safe, let me know some of the songs that are on your playlist. I'm sure they aren't any worse than Sneakernight.
Peace, love and workflows,
Andrea

I relate to this SO hard. Except for me it's the opposite: If I have an obligation to another person, that's now a deadline I can't miss and if it's something I need to do for me (i.e. chores), I will put it off forever. I love the embarrassing music playlist idea. I have to play a podcast to get me moving in the morning. It is a game changer!
